Recently we received a small pot of goo with a note stating we were now the proud parents of ‘Herman the German’ a friendship cake. He was to sit on our kitchen counter for 10 days, being lovingly stirred, ingredients added on occasion, and generally fussed over by our two boys. This weekend we split the batter into four – two parts to pass on, one part to bake and one part to keep going for a new cake in a further ten days time. The boys love baking, so they did the mixing (most of the mix made it to the tin) – and when he came out the oven he was delicious. Sour dough baking is not just for bread, that’s for sure.
