Herman the German has been living with us for a little while now. He is a friendship cake that was given to us in the form of a smelly batter. Think sourdough cake-mix. He sits in your kitchen for 10 days, being stirred once a day and fed a couple of times with milk, sugar and flour. On day ten you split Herman into four lots – one to bake, one to keep and two to pass on to others. Over time he develops personality, It is not longer referred to as the cake batter, but indeed Herman.
We baked him again today with loads of apple and spice – really moist and delicious, a really deep flavor.
I must trace his heratige – a family tree perhaps?
